While we aren’t expecting life-threatening flooding, 2 to 6 inches of rain, which is what is in the forecast for much of Lower Michigan, is certainly enough to disrupt daily life and cause potential safety hazards.

  • If you live in a flood-prone, low-lying area, you should consider taking necessary precautions today before the rain arrives in case flooding occurs.
  • For those with sump pumps, ensure that they’re working properly and have a plan in place in case they fail.
  • It’s also important to have evacuation plans ready for you and your pets in the unlikely event that your home becomes inundated with water. Urban areas are also at risk of flooding due to poor drainage.

Flooding safety tips

Never walk into flood waters. It can be hard to tell how deep flooded areas are, so avoid walking or driving through them. Turn around, don't drown. Graphic provided by NOAA.NOAA

According to the National Weather Service, due to the nature of the event, major river flooding is not expected. However, streams and smaller rivers may still become overwhelmed with water.

  • If you live near a flood prone stream or river, have a plan in place in case water levels reach flood stages.

Areas along major rivers like the Grand River and Kalamazoo River should be prepared for flooding in the coming days as the water will take time to travel downstream.

  • If you’re driving and a street or roadway becomes flooded, don’t try to drive through the ponding water. Turn around and find a safer route.
  • Lastly, ensure that all drains and downspouts are working properly before the rain begins. Having an effective method of water removal can help prevent flooding.
