Barbie fans will soon be able to immerse themselves in the world of their favourite plastic doll turned feminist icon.

Barbie Beach House is due to open as an attraction at Mattel Adventure Park when it opens later this year. As Greta Gerwig made a full-scale version of the doll's house for the film, the theme park will have a vibrant pink property large enough for humans to wander around.

Mattel has not revealed a huge amount about the attraction, beyond saying it will boast "state-of-the-art technology while simultaneously delivering a serious dose of nostalgia".

"The Barbie Beach House features the Barbie Dream Closet personalised shopping experience that brings Barbie to life using hologram technology along with Barbie Beach Rooftop perfect for kicking back with a signature beverage," a website for the theme park states.

"Barbie also takes us on a journey from Malibu to Brooklyn in an innovative Flying Theatre next door equipped with a world-class dome screen and 8K projection."

In August last year the toy company announced that the Mattel Adventure Park will become Arizona’s first fully themed indoor/outdoor amusement park and open sometime in 2024. The park will stretch out across a 9-acre plot, most of which is indoors, and open for 365 days of the year. As well as the Barbie Dream House, several other Mattel toys have provided inspiration for the attractions.

One of them is the Hot Wheels Bone Shaker which will see thrill-seekers climb 84 feet in the air, as well as the double-looping Hot Wheels Twin Mill Racer which features a double loop and two corkscrews. Meanwhile Masters of the Universe fans can fight for Eternia in a massive, 4,500 square-foot laser tag arena in the likeness of the iconic Castle Grayskull fortress. Another attraction is the Thomas & Friends: World of Sodor, featuring seven family-friendly experiential attractions and rides including dedicated indoor play space for little adventurers and fans of the train.

The huge success of 2023's Barbie film has seen renewed interest in the plastic figurine as well as a sexism row. Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in the film, earned an Academy Award nomination, but star Margot Robbie and director Gerwig did not.

Fans said the snub proved the Academy was “the pinnacle of sexism and misogyny in the industry”. Others pointed out the irony of a movie described by Gerwig as “most certainly a feminist film” ending up with a nomination for its male lead but not its female star or director.
