Some UK homes could find they are now able to connect to the web for free. That's all thanks to one Internet Service Provider (ISP) now offering 12 months of access without paying a penny for the privilege. Community Fibre, which provides broadband to properties across London, is joining forces with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Jobcentre Plus to hand out access to those struggling to get online.

“I am thrilled by how working with Community Fibre, DWP are able to give so many Londoners free, high speed internet for the next year," said DWP Minister of State Mims Davies.

“Whether it’s interviewing for a job or accessing vital services, decent internet is necessary for all of us to get on with day to day lives. If you’re interested and think you might be eligible for this key support, speak to your local Jobcentre today.

Now, before you get too excited about the thought of free broadband It's only for those with Community Fibre in their street and who are DWP customers who are disabled, carers or have been in receipt of benefits for more than three months.

Clearly, that cuts down who can get this offer but the deal does serve as a reminder about so-called Social Tariffs.

Most of the UK's biggest Internet Service Providers (ISPs) - including BT, Sky and Virgin Media - all offer cheaper plans to those who claim benefits such as Universal Credit.

Despite these options being available across the UK, millions still aren't taking advantage and that could be costing them.

According to the latest stats, just 5.1% of those eligible for social tariffs claim them, and less than half (47%) are aware of the discount.

Social Tariffs start from around £15 per month which is almost half the price of standard connections.

Over a year, that could offer savings of almost £200.

If you are unsure about all the plans then here are some of the options available right now.
