A leading bookmaker was coming to terms with "one of the toughest Royal Ascots in our history" after paying out a second six-figure bet on Friday.

Star Sports, which has betting pitches on the course at Ascot, has forged a reputation for accepting six-figure bets from high-rolling punters.

On Wednesday the firm took its biggest bet of the week when a customer asked to stake £100,000 on the favourite for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, last year’s Derby winner Auguste Rodin.

The Aidan O’Brien star delivered for his connections and the punter by winning the £1 million race, as a result of which the firm had to payout a whopping sum of £262,500, which included the £100,000 stake, to the unnamed customer.

On Friday, Star Sports took another huge wager on an Aidan O'Brien-trained runner, the twice-raced Fairy Godmother in the Albany Stakes. She was to make the punter sweat as she travelled strongly at the back of the field but with a lot of ground to make up.

When Moore made his move he had to bide his time before he could find a route through the field, but once in the clear Fairy Godmother managed to pick off her rivals and score by three-quarters of a length.

Luke Tarr, Head of PR at Star Sports, said: “When we saw Ryan Moore and Fairy Godmother finding all sorts of traffic in the Albany, we thought we’d dodged a bullet after laying £100,000 on course at 2-1.

“However, Moore was not to be denied and got his filly up for a remarkable success. It’s another in a string of winning big stake bets we’ve taken this week, having taken £100,000 at 13-8 on Auguste Rodin on Wednesday and £20,000 at 13-2 on Jayarebe yesterday.

“There’s no denying that this week has been one of the toughest Royal Ascots in our history, but this is why we’re here, to take big bets, and we’ll be here tomorrow to do it all again.”
