Jon Rahm has been forced with withdraw from LIV Golf Houston through injury, leading to doubts over whether he will be fit to compete at the US Open next week.

Rahm suffered an injury scare on Friday during the first round at Houston, when hitting his approach shot on the seventh hole. He began to limp and was visibly in extreme pain, after only just having his foot looked at before teeing off.

According to the LIV Golf broadcast, Rahm has suffered a cut between his toes which is causing major discomfort when taking shots. Golf Digest reported that Rahm had a foot blister that ruptured into a cut, and it was too risky to complete the tournament with the US Open a priority.

If the reports are correct, a cut gives Rahm more chance of being ready for the US Open than a muscular injury. Rahm was even par throughout Saturday's play before withdrawing, and three-under-par for the tournament.

Rahm will not want to miss the third major of the 2024 season, and the Spaniard is one of the favourites to win the competition, currently priced at 12/1. Even if he does make the event, the lasting effects of his injury could impact his performance.

Rahm won the US Open back in 2021, clinching the first major of his career before winning the Masters in 2023. Rahm was tied for 10th at the tournament last year, but hasn't been at his best in 2024 since signing for LIV Golf and ditching the PGA Tour.

The 29-year-old was tied-45th in the Masters earlier this year, and didn't even make the cut at the PGA Championship. Rahm has played less since signing for the Saudi-backed breakaway league, and so far it hasn't paid off in terms of results on the course.

Rahm hadn't played since the USPGA ended on May 19, but LIV Houston was meant to be the perfect warm-up before the US Open. He will have to be assessed this week before making a decision closer to the start of the tournament on June 13.

He will be keen to leave a better impression than last year, after letting his frustration get the better of him in Los Angeles. Rahm became the first Spaniard to ever win at the US Open in 2021, but two years later he took his anger out on a sign.

After going bogey-bogey on hole 17 and 18 in the second-round back in 2023, Rahm slammed his putter into a credential sign and knocked it over. He apologised and managed to make a strong comeback the following day, but finished tied-10th.

Since 2019, Rahm has finished 23rd or higher in each US Open tournament, and statistically it's his second-best major behind the Masters.
