Manchester United fans have torn into a social media post paying tribute to Mason Mount following Saturday night's dramatic 1-1 draw with Brentford.

The Red Devils were dominated by their hosts for large periods at the GTech Community Stadium before taking the lead in the 96th minute through the returning Mount, only for Kristoffer Ajer to restore parity just three minutes later.

Mount has endured a torrid time at Old Trafford since leaving Chelsea in a £55million transfer in the summer and has missed a significant chunk of the season through injury. His goal against Brentford with his maiden strike for United - but a post shared on the club's social media account referencing Mount and glossing over the disappointing result was, unsurprisingly, savaged by fans.

The post, which read: "A night to forget but a memorable moment for Mason", was promptly inundated with less than complimentary replies with one fan quipping: "This club cares more about social media than the actual performance..."

Others were far more brutal, with one fan saying: "Not now! Read the room," while another posted facts to back up their point, saying: "Not the time. Our worst performance for years, 31 shots conceded and they had 85 touches in our box."

Failure to beat Brentford means United are 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League, although the Red Devils do have a game in hand on Unai Emery's side.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted post-match that his team should have seen out the match after taking the lead so late. He told Sky Sports: "If you are winning then you shouldn't give it away. Normally we are a strong side in such situations, we have to bring it over the line and that is disappointing.

"We should have acted differently in the occasion when we conceded the equaliser. It was absolutely unnecessary. I have to make compliment to the team to hang in there and keep fighting. Even when we don't play well we have to win the game and we almost did. That is what disappoints me the most. We should all stand up and all take responsibility for this. We will keep fighting. It could be a very good point in the end."
