Fans have noticed that Manchester United set yet another unwanted record after finishing in their worst-ever Premier League position.

Erik ten Hag's side ended the league campaign with a 2-0 win at Brighton on Sunday thanks to goals from Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund. Despite that, it didn't stop United from finishing eighth, which represents their lowest final Premier League position since the competition was rebranded in 1992.

However, that wasn't the only unwanted record the Red Devils set on the final day of the campaign, as one supporter pointed out on social media. That is because for the first time since the start of the Premier League era, Manchester United are not the best 'United' in English football.

Newcastle United, who earned a 4-2 victory over Brentford to end seventh and in the Europa Conference League spot, finished above the Red Devils on goal difference. It was the first time Manchester United have not finished as the best 'United' since Leeds United won the First Division in the 1991/92 campaign.

One fan said: "Eras come to an end." Another added: "United in shambles. Retire the word. Use Amalgamated or something." A third wrote: "More of a damning indictment on the other United's if anything."

A fourth admitted: "Not the best Manchester, not the best United, harsh times to be United fan since 2013 and no hope for the future. Imagine over performing and yet finishing season with negative GD."

As another fan pointed out, the Red Devils also finished with a negative goal difference (-1) for the first time since the 1989/90 season when Sir Alex Ferguson's men ended 13th. United have also never lost more matches in the Premier League than they have done this season (14).

Manchester United have ended with their lowest-ever Premier League finish

It has been a fairly miserable campaign for the Red Devils, but they can end the season with a major trophy when they take on champions Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Speaking after the win over Brighton, Ten Hag said: "We had to win this game. Of course, for our belief. Of course, we also need the points for the rankings but it was not in our hands.

"We want to lift our levels. We've got players returning and it's important they're fit for the final but also to return to some patterns. I think it's clear to see that, once we had players back in their positions, when we have original defenders available, again our levels are increasing."
