Manchester United remain in talks with Shola Shoretire over the possibility of a new contract.

The 20-year-old forward scored nine goals and provided four assists in 12 appearances for United's under-21s last term, and made his first team debut as a 17-year-old in 2020/21. The highly regarded striker has not broached the first team picture under Erik ten Hag, however.

The starlet was one of several players cast from United's changing room amid an influx of new signings upon the Dutchman's arrival in 2022. With little room remaining among the first team facilities, reports suggested a group was shunted into the under-23 changing area.

Phil Jones, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, Teden Mengi and Shoretire were said to be the players relegated. And now, only Shoretire is in talks to remain at the club.

Williams was not offered a contract to extend his stay despite making 53 senior appearances for the club. The 23-year-old spent last term with promotion-winners Ipswich Town though did not feature following the turn of the year.

In the aftermath of returning to the youth dressing room, Shoretire went on loan to Bolton Wanderers in January 2023. The young striker only managed one goal on his first foray away from Old Trafford as he made 16 appearances.

That did not stop him from fielding interest last summer, however. Opportunities in the Championship and abroad were on the cards on transfer deadline day but the right move did not materialise.

Shoretire is not the only player currently in discussions with the club. Talks continue for Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton and Omari Forson over new terms, while Charlie McNeill has been made an offer but the club confirmed he 'is seeking new opportunities elsewhere'.

Whether the Ten Hag's future has any impact on coming to an agreement remains to be seen. The former Ajax boss' future still needs to be resolved following United's FA Cup final win against rivals Manchester City.

An in-depth club review is underway at United which will see Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club's new hierarchy make a decision on Ten Hag's future. Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank and Mauricio Pochettino have all been touted as potential replacements for Ten Hag, who has one year left on his contract after joining the club in 2022.
