HMRC has confirmed the date when Monday's delayed Child Benefit payments should land in claimant's bank accounts.

On Monday, the tax office - which is in charge of running Child Benefit - confirmed that half a million people did not receive their Child Benefit payment. The delay was due to a "processing error" with the system sending the money to bank accounts. HMRC confirmed the issue had been resolved yesterday evening. It also apologised for the glitch and said it was working to "put measures in place to prevent this from happening again".

Aounrd 6.9million households claim Child Benefits, which are usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday. You can be paid weekly if you are a single parent and claim Universal Credit. Currently, Child Benefit is worth £25.60 a week for an eldest or only child and £16.95 a week for any other children.

HMRC told those affected that they would face even further delays, as the payment - originally due on Monday - would now be paid on Wednesday, June 5 instead. Two days after it was originally meant to be paid. The payment will have the reference of "HMRC Child Benefit".

Many parents took to X - formerly Twitter - to express their anger at the situation with others sharing their worry that the payment will be delayed again. One parent asked HMRC: "It’s not showing the child benefit payment as coming in tomorrow… it would normally show as a pending payment on my bank? Is it 100% going to be paid tomorrow?"

Another said they were unable to top up their energy as the money didn't come in on time. They said: "What about the people who are sitting without being able to top energy up? My supplier won't help and also need food shopping and can't get anywhere as don't have transport. Anxiety through the roof."

Another said: "Problem is that most people do not have money to fall back on and rely upon this money to feed their little ones or even just to put nappies on their children's bum, it's disgusting that people are expected not to call when it is their children suffering because of HMRC screw up."

An HMRC spokesperson said: "We are very sorry that some customers did not receive their scheduled Child Benefit payments as expected and we understand the concern and difficulty this may have caused. We have now fixed the problem and are putting measures in place to prevent this from happening again. Affected customers will now receive their payments on Wednesday morning (5th June). Anyone who has incurred a direct financial loss because of the delayed payment can apply for redress by completing our online complaints form.”
