Netflix fans have been tuning in in their droves to a brand-new blockbuster driven by a cool performance from Michael Fassbender. The Irish actor is starring in Netflix’s The Killer, a stylish revenge flick from one of modern cinema’s greatest auteurs and based on a French graphic novel.
Directed by Fight Club and Seven director David Fincher, from a script by Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker, The Killer sees Fassbender as a nameless assassin who, after a fateful near miss, battles his employers – and himself – on an international hunt for retribution. The film highlights the acting chops of the two-time Oscar nominee as a cold, methodical killer and posits actor and director as a match made in heaven.

Quentin Tarantino’s alternative history war epic sees Brad Pitt lead a team of Jewish American soldiers in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Fassbender is only in the film for a little over 25 minutes, but one of his two scenes is one the film’s stand-out moments.
He stars as British Army Lieutenant Archie Hicox in the film’s basement bar scene where – while undercover as a German soldier – enjoys a friendly drinking game with a member of the SS. The role allowed the Irish-German actor to show off his command of the German language and steal the nail-biting scene.

X-Men First Class
Fassbender first joined the superhero world in a blockbuster prequel to 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. He followed Ian McKellen as a younger Erik Lehnsherr – later known as Magneto – in the 1960s-set film.
It centres on Erik and Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) as they work together to find others like them, but Erik’s vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a division between them. Fassbender reprised his role in the film’s sequels, 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, and 2019’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Steve Jobs
From Trainspotting director Danny Boyle with a screenplay from The Social Network’s Aaron Sorkin, this biopic is set backstage in the minutes before three iconic product launches spanning the career of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Despite being a disappointment at the box office – it grossed just $34.4m on a budget of $30m – Steve Jobs received widespread acclaim from critics and general audiences, with Fassbender earning a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role as the late tech pioneer.
Billed as an “intimate portrait” of Jobs, the drama boasts an all-star cast including Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels and Katherine Waterston.

12 Years a Slave
Fassbender earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role as a slave owner in Steve McQueen’s biographical drama. The highly acclaimed film is based on the 1853 memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup, an African American free man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.
It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup with a stellar supporting cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Lupita Nyong'o, Sarah Paulson and Brad Pitt. Fassbender stars as ruthless slave owner Edwin Epps.
12 Years a Slave is available to stream with Amazon’s Prime Video, which also includes a 30-day free trial and free next-day delivery with Amazon’s huge Black Friday sales event. Prometheus
This 2012 sci-fi horror acts as a prequel to the Alien franchise, with Alien director Ridley Scott returning to the helm. It follows the mission of the deep space research vessel USS Prometheus as it follows a star map to the distant moon of LV-223, several light years from Earth.
Fassbender stars alongside Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba as human-like android David, the ship’s butler and maintenance ‘man’. Fassbender used the replicants from Scott’s 1982 sci-fi Blade Runner as inspiration for the character.
Prometheus and its 2017 sequel Alien: Covenant are available to stream with Disney+.
