Motoring gurus have warned drivers to tweak their car interiors after it was revealed that a common component in petrol and diesel vehicles could pose a serious risk.

CarMats.co.uk is advising drivers to double-check that their mats are "properly fitted" to avoid any interference with pedal operation. This cautionary advice follows a TikTok video going viral, showing a hair-raising close call. One driver recalled how their high-end vehicle wouldn't stop accelerating because the mat had jammed the pedal, describing the ordeal as a "scary incident".

The TikTok user @waxsway shared: "I was driving this Maserati to work and I hit the gas and the gas pedal stuck and the car just kept going and going. Luckily I was able to stop it." They continued: "What happened is, when I hit the gas, the pedal got stuck and I kept going and going and going."

"It was kind of scary but luckily it stopped after like six or seven seconds and I was not in a bad area." They also cautioned: "So if you end up getting aftermarket floor mats, especially the rubber ones, just be careful." Since being posted last year, the clip has racked up over 189,000 likes and has been shared more than 14,000 times.

CarMats.co.uk added to the matter, emphasizing that drivers have a duty to ensure their vehicles are safe, reports the Express. They've urged motorists to always verify that their mats are securely positioned before hitting the road. A spokesperson said: "Properly fitted car mats are crucial for maintaining a safe driving environment.

"Loose or ill-fitting mats can shift unexpectedly, causing them to get stuck under the pedal and potentially leading to accidents on the road. A well-fitted car mat ensures that drivers have unobstructed access to brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals. Any obstruction or slippage caused by poorly fitted mats could affect the driver's ability to respond quickly to changing road conditions."

CarMats also emphasized that loose mats could pose a significant distraction for motorists, likely causing them to "divert attention from the road." The company urged motorists to ensure they use well-fitted designs at all times as these are "less prone to shifting or bunching up", thereby reducing wear and tear.
