A new horror film has dropped that would make perfect viewing this Halloween. Brand-new creature feature Appendage follows a young woman whose thoughts manifest into a monster – known as the Appendage – that threatens to upend her life.

The disturbing flick comes from the mind of writer-director Anna Zlokovic in her feature debut and is developed from her six-minute short of the same name that screened at the Sundance Film Festival. The up-and-coming filmmaker was named one of IndieWire’s 28 Rising Female Filmmakers to Watch in 2023.

Appendage premiered on US streaming platform Hulu as part of its Huluween celebrations and launched in the UK on October 18. It joins a host of other hair-raising horrors that have launched for the spooky season on Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Paramount+.

What is Appendage about?

Appendage follows young fashion designer Hannah. She seems fine on the surface, but secretly struggles with debilitating self-doubt.

Soon these buried feelings begin to make Hannah physically sick and sprout into a ferocious growth on her body. As Hannah’s health declines, the appendage begins to fuel her anxieties – her perceived lack of talent at work, her deteriorating relationships with her boyfriend and best friend, and her parents’ lack of love and understanding.

At her breaking point, Hannah makes a shocking discovery – there are others out there like her.

Who is in the cast of Appendage?

Appendage’s cast is led by Hadley Robinson as troubled fashion designer Hannah. The American actress is known for roles in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Netflix’s The Pale Blue Eye.

She stars alongside Schitt’s Creek and 12 Monkeys star Emily Hampshire, Four Weddings and a Funeral’s Brandon Mychal Smith, Dallas’ Deborah Rennard, The Flash’s Kausar Mohammed and You’re the Worst’s Desmin Borges.

How to watch Appendage in the UK

Appendage is available to stream in the UK with a subscription to Disney+, which currently costs £7.99. But from November 1, a subscription to Disney+ could see members paying an extra £36 a year.

That is because the streaming service is refreshing its pricing, meaning existing customers will be automatically bumped up to the platform’s new more expensive Premium plan unless they change their subscription. Disney fans have until October 31 to sign up and benefit from the current pricing before the price increase.

Subscribing to an annual membership today locks in the current price and gives new members 12 months access for less than the cost of eight months on the Disney’s new Premium plan.
