But to convert one's maiden Test 100 into a world record speaks volumes of the player's skill and talent and it did happen once 66 years back.

Birth of a legend

Sir Garry Sobers' maiden Test ton was an innings of 365 not out against Pakistan in 1958. It broke Sir Len Hutton's world record of 364 for the highest individual Test score.

First of many

Sobers would go on to score another 25 Test 100s but the first one would take him into the history books.

Lasted for almost four decades

Sobers held the world record for 36 years. It was finally broken in 1994.

Illustrious career

Sobers played 93 Tests, scored 8032 runs at an average of 57.78 and also took 235 wickets. His only ODI saw him score zero. He also hit six sixes in an over in a county game.

Who broke the record?

The record was broken by another legend by the name of Brian Lara who made 375 vs England in 1994. He also holds the current record with 400 not out vs England in 2004.

Unique feat

Sobers is one of three players to convert their maiden Test 100 into a 300. Bob Simpson made 311 vs England in 1964 and Karun Nair made 303 not out vs England in 2016.
