Cover Story (view full-size image): Agricultural residues such as wheat bran are an abundant source of carbohydrates waiting to be utilized. The biggest challenge is its complex composition from different polysaccharides, requiring various enzymes for its hydrolysis. A co-cultivation of the filamentous fungi A. niger and T. reesei can produce a suitable enzyme set. In this study, the integration of the enzyme production and the hydrolysis of wheat bran was demonstrated up to the 1000 L scale. Additionally, the residual solids, consisting of plant and fungal biomass, demonstrated improved nutritional value for animals. View this paper
