This review presents an understanding of lithium silicate-based glass ceramics in dentistry, namely zirconia-reinforced lithium silicates and lithium–aluminium disilicates. A description of the microstructure, manufacturing, strengthening, mechanical and biological properties is provided. An exploration of the surface treatments alternative to hydrofluoric acid etching revealed promising adhesion performance upon acid neutralisation and plasma treatment. Subtractive manufacturing of partially and fully crystallised lithium silicate-based glass ceramics and additive manufacturing modalities are addressed, wherein challenges related to the latter are highlighted. Finally, the short-term clinical performance of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicates and lithium–aluminium disilicates was comparable to lithium disilicate ceramics, predicting encouraging long-term potential.
