Cover Story (view full-size image): Off-shore acoustic sources, like wind farms and maritime traffic lanes, can contribute significantly to noise pollution on land. Outdoor sound propagation in such coastal environments depends on several factors, including atmospheric conditions and surface characteristics along the acoustic path. Predicting the acoustic transmission loss across long distances over water requires an accurate model of the acoustic effect of the water roughness. A numerical methodology is presented to account for the surface roughness by means of an equivalent surface impedance. This equivalent impedance approach improves computational efficiency in cases of sound propagation over extended ranges.View this paper
