Cover Story (view full-size image): The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) strains of pathogenic Escherichia coli in camel populations raises significant concerns regarding the zoonotic transmission of resistant bacteria. Camel herds, pivotal in various regions, serve as potential reservoirs for pathogenic E. coli with multidrug resistance. Understanding the zoonotic potential of these strains is paramount to mitigate the risk of transmission to humans and prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Our study delves into the molecular markers and AMR profiles of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) strains isolated from septicaemic camel calves, some of which showed multidrug- or colistin resistance, while some of them showed the highly mucous phenotype termed hypermucoviscosity, which is rarely reported in E. coliView this paper
