Cover Story (view full-size image): The VIP-2 (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion principle-2) collaboration is conducting high-sensitivity experiments on foundational issues in quantum gravity and quantum mechanics within the low-background environment of the Gran Sasso underground laboratories of the INFN. Our recent phenomenological investigations predict a characteristic electromagnetic radiation signature for non-commutative quantum gravity and dynamical wave function collapse models in the keV range. This work details our ongoing efforts to optimize a prototype setup using a broad-energy germanium (BEGe) detector. The goal is to achieve a lower energy threshold in the order of keV and test the peculiar X-ray signature expected from selected targets with varying atomic structures. We discuss the current status of the activities, the challenges faced, and future plans. View this paper
