Cover Story (view full-size image): Our analysis found that people with severe mental illness were 40% more likely to have lost teeth than the general population and 15% of the sample were edentulous. Tooth loss is the end stage of periodontal disease and dental caries when conservative treatments have failed. This can affect functions as basic as eating and speaking. It can damage a person’s confidence and self-esteem. And, as we saw in this study, poor oral health is also linked to other health conditions like diabetes. To tackle this neglected health inequality, The Right to Smile consensus statement argues for a much greater focus on prevention, with support for improved oral hygiene and access to regular dental checks. Poor oral health should not be the inevitable consequence of experiencing severe mental ill health. View this paper
