Cover Story (view full-size image): This study examined the links between minority stress and activism among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals using a cross-sectional online survey. Lesbians, gays, and individuals engaged in LGBT+ activism experienced a high number of negative events related to their sexual minority status. A positive attitude toward LGBT+ activism was correlated with more negative events, higher expectations of rejection, and lower internalized homophobia as sources of minority stress. Network Analysis identified that a positive attitude toward LGBT+ activism, expectations of rejection, and negative events were the most influential variables in maintaining minority stress. Prevention and intervention programs should target reducing minority stress, particularly negative events and rejection, especially among lesbians, gays, and LGBT+ activists. View this paper
