Cover Story (view full-size image): We conducted the Searching for Management Approaches to Reduce HAI Transmission (SMART) study to identify management practices used by hospitals considered to be higher-performing in healthcare-associated infection (HAI) prevention. We identified six management practices used at higher-performing hospitals: (1) Communicating HAI Data; (2) Rewards & Recognition; (3) Speaking Up; (4) Patient & Family Education; (5) Tiered Huddles; and (6) EHR Alerts. This paper presents results from a qualitative study about how managers use these practices to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections and catheter-associated urinary tract infections, focusing specifically on Communicating HAI Data. More information can be found in the SMART Toolkit, a free, online resource that details the management practices and provides practical tools and guidance for implementation. View this paper
