Cover Story (view full-size image): Complementary or Alternative Medicine (CAM) use is high in children, but little is known of the influencing factors. A prospective study among children attending a tertiary care hospital assessed variables associated with CAM use. One-hundred and thirty parents took part, with the average child age 6.7 years. CAM was used by 45% of children, the most common were oral supplements and body manipulation. Children were more likely to use CAM if their parent had higher health literacy, and the child attended the emergency department within a year, but no association was seen for child well-being. No difference was seen in social deprivation deciles between CAM users/non-users, but specific deciles were over-represented by users compared to regional population estimates. Only 40% of parents using CAM for their child disclosed this to the medical team. View this paper
