Cover Story (view full-size image): The gut–brain axis (GBA) is a complex network connecting the gastrointestinal tract and brain which comprises the vagus nerve, enteric nervous system, immune signals, microbial metabolites, etc. Recent advances in microbiome research have indicated the role of gut bacteria in influencing brain function through neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, thereby affecting mood, cognition, and behaviour. Disruptions in the GBA are linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The evolving understanding of the GBA underscores the need for novel therapeutic approaches targeting gut microbiota. This review explores the mechanisms through which gut microbiota influence brain health and potential therapeutic interventions aiming to modulate the gut microbiome. View this paper
