Cover Story (view full-size image): In European mountains, most beech forests are managed for timber production. In Italy's central Apennines (Tuscany), we studied beetle abundance, diversity, similarity, and commonness/rarity in five beech-dominated forests with increasing management intensity. Three forests were managed with even-aged shelterwood systems, including one with continuous cover forestry and one with old growth. We found that the old-growth forest harbored more threatened species than the managed sites. The variation in taxonomic spectrum of saproxylic communities reflected differences in forest management. The impact of management on beetle communities was better explained by evaluating their taxonomic structure rather than only total species abundance and diversity, offering more insights into sustainable forestry. View this paper
