Piccadilly Gardens will be showing the Women's World Cup final with thousands expected to enjoy the nail-biting match against Spain on the big screen.

After a triumphant 3-1 victory against Australia on Wednesday (August 16), the Lionesses became the first English side since 1966 to reach the final on the world stage thanks to goals from Lauren Hemp, Ella Toone and Alessia Russo.

The Lionesses will now go against Spain on Sunday (August 20) in a bid to take home the prized Women's World Cup 2023 trophy.

Pubs and bars up and down the country will be screening the match, as will cinemas, bowling alleys and restaurants as World Cup fever reaches its conclusion.

Piccadilly Gardens will open up as a fan zone from 10am on Sunday to allow people to sit back and watch the game on a big screen in (hopefully) nice weather. Capacity will be capped at 6,000 people and it will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fans will be able to choose whether to watch the big screen action from the strictly no alcohol grassed area, or from the adjoining raised platform area where existing bars will operate in accordance with their usual Sunday licencing restrictions.

Fans are encouraged to travel light, with no big bags, and to bring their own brunch and soft drinks. No glasses or bottles will be allowed, and bag searches will be in operation.

Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills, Employment and Leisure, said: "As a city that loves its football it has been absolutely fantastic to watch the skill and determination shown by the Lionesses over these last few weeks in the World Cup. Getting to the Final is a massive achievement and we want them to know that the whole of Manchester is behind them.

"So if you're looking for some big screen action to cheer the Lionesses on and an atmosphere to rival that in Australia, Piccadilly Gardens is the place to be. But whatever you do - and wherever you are, this is one match you don't want to miss!"
