It's not far to travel from Manchester

An Instagram-savvy mum, who shares travel tips under @thetravelmum, has been singing praises of this "amazing" spot. She posted clips of her trip online, stating: "Portmeirion is a tourist village in north Wales, some say designed and built with inspiration from the Italian town of Portofino."

This mum-of-four is an expert budget hunter who considers a quirky Welsh getaway spot perfect for those seeking "some Italian vibes but on a shoestring".

The seaside village, located at Aber Iau, Gwynedd, is modelled on an Italian village and boasts its own beach, gelato parlour, Mediterranean-style cafes, boutique shops and plush hotels.

Discussing Portmeirion on social media, she said: "You can visit for the day, sit and enjoy some gelato and relax by the beach. If you fancy a treat you can even stay there overnight and enjoy some top class dining. We saw a wedding there too! ".

She was surprised by mixed reviews online, but says her family had a great time visiting the unique destination.

Her post proved popular with her followers who rushed to share their experiences and eagerness to visit. One said: "Wowww can't believe this is Wales." While another added: "Need to add to our list," and a third shared: "This is where I got married, it is beautiful."

Planning a trip from London means at least five hours and 50 minutes on a train, around five hours from Manchester, or about four hours and 45 minutes from Birmingham.

Alternatively, some prefer to drive or take a coach trip for an escape to Wales.

Those wanting to cut journey time may want to consider flying; Anglesey Airport only 30 miles from Portmeirion- offers twice-daily weekday flights from Cardiff Airport.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are the closest major international hubs, both roughly two-hour drives away. The distance from both these airports is approximately 100 miles with driving times around two hours.

Hence, for those living in the south, it might be worth contemplating a flight to the north of England first if long car or train journeys aren't your thing.
