Fans have reacted after Manchester icons John Squire and Liam Gallagher released their new single this morning (January 5).

The Stone Roses legend and the former Oasis frontman had been teasing their collaboration for a number of weeks, sparking major speculation. Titled Just Another Rainbow, the track had its first play on BBC Radio One just before 7am this morning.

It features Squire's signature guitar work, including an epic guitar solo, with listeners likening it to a proper Stone Roses song. Gallagher's unmistakable vocals, meanwhile, chronicle the feelings of being let down and never getting what you really want.

Ahead of Just Another Rainbow's release, Squire confirmed the theme of the song was disappointment, yet described it as 'one of the most uplifting tracks we’ve made together, which is weird.'

Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts on the new track. Many were smitten with it, but some pointed out an issue which made them 'laugh.'

Sharing a Spotify link to the song, @shiner_sam said: "On my second coffee and fourth listen and I love it. The Squire build up is amazing... excited to hear the rest of the album". @StuartTring praised: "When two iconic legends come together magic happens".

@NathSert said: "...The guitar solo is huge, really sounds like a Stone Roses one… not surprising I guess" as @IanScrivener5 agreed: "I really like it,the guitar and vocals are great. So good to have John Squire back making new music again".

But others didn't like that Gallagher sings the colours of the rainbow mid-way through the song. @T2Mardybum said: "If they just left out the naming the colours of the rainbow bit [two laughing face emojis]. I like the track other than that."

Last month, Squire and Gallagher announced they'd be releasing new music together in 2024, with the promise of more to come as the year unfolds. The pair's new project came about after the guitarist joined Gallagher onstage at Knebworth in 2022 to play on Champagne Supernova – as he did with Oasis in 1996.

Following their performance, Squire sent over three songs which Gallagher dubbed 'all mega.' They began writing together, working remotely before moving to Squire's Macclesfield studio.

The pair then completed three weeks of sessions in Los Angeles with producer Greg Kurstin.

While Just Another Rainbow represents the duo’s first collaboration together, the first time they were in a room together was back in 1989. The then 16-year-old Liam attended a Stone Roses gig at the International 2 in Manchester.

Four years later they met when both bands were recording in Monmouth. Oasis had just started work on what would become ‘Definitely Maybe’ while The Stone Roses were recording The Second Coming’.

Back in October, Gallagher announced a new tour to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe. The run of dates in 2024 include three homecoming gigs in Manchester with recently announced support from indie bands Cast and The View.
