Hibernian manager Lee Johnson has once again reiterated that he is hopeful the club will re-sign Manchester United defender Will Fish on loan this summer.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News just over a week ago, Fish has agreed to return to the Scottish Premiership club on a season-long loan deal. He spent last season at the Edinburgh-based outfit and racked up 21 appearances, scoring three goals.

The centre-back, 20, has featured in each of United's opening two pre-season friendlies this summer, stepping off the bench at half-time in both fixtures. He partnered Jonny Evans in the heart of the defence in the second half of Wednesday's 1-0 win over Lyon at Murrayfield Stadium.

However, he has, as expected, not been included in the 31-man squad that United boss Erik ten Hag has named for the club's pre-season tour of the United States. He is expected to remain in the UK and finalise his return to Easter Road.

And Hibs boss Johnson, who confirmed earlier this week that the Scottish club are in "constant contact" with both Fish and United, has admitted that they are "waiting" to finalise his return to the club.

"We're still looking to get Will through," Johnson told Sky Sports. "Obviously he's a Manchester United player but we're here, waiting, and ready.

"We're in constant contact with Will and United and their needs come first at the moment in terms of their pre-season fixtures but we hope to get him here as soon as possible."

Fish, who graduated from United's academy, has made just one competitive appearance for the club at senior level, stepping off the bench in the closing stages of the 2-1 win over Wolves at Molineux on the final day of the Covid-hit 2020/21 season. He has since had loan spells at both Stockport County and Hibs.

The defender went on last summer's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia and made one appearance, only to be sent off in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
