Hibernian manager Lee Johnson has confirmed that he is confident the club will re-sign Manchester United defender Will Fish on loan in this summer's transfer window.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News last Wednesday, Fish has agreed to rejoin the Scottish Premiership club on loan for a second season running. He joined the Edinburgh-based club on a season-long loan deal at the end of last summer's transfer window and made 21 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with three goals.

Fish, who is a graduate from United's academy, featured in the second half of the Reds' 2-0 win over Leeds United in Norway last week. He was one of 11 players introduced by Erik ten Hag at half-time and he produced a solid and professional performance in the heart of the defence alongside fellow youngster Rhys Bennett.

The defender is expected to be included in the squad that will take on Lyon at Murrayfield on Wednesday and is likely to travel with the United squad to the US on tour. He is then expected to stay in the Scottish capital, finalise his move to Hibs and prepare for the start of the new season.

Boss Johnson has now confirmed that he is optimistic about re-signing Fish, admitting that the club is "constant contact" with both United and the player.

"We're in constant contact with Manchester United and I am in constant contact with Will himself," said Johnson, as quoted by Football Scotland. "I'm very positive about that one.

"But until it is signed, sealed and delivered it's not one I can guarantee is going to happen."

Fish, who was sent-off during United's 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in last summer's pre-season tour of Australia, has made just one competitive appearance for United at senior level. He made his one and only outing for the club on the final day of the Covid-hit 2020/21 season, stepping off the bench late on in a 2-1 win over Wolves at Molineux.
