With Manchester United players arriving back to first team training this week, the future of Mason Greenwood was unsurprisingly brought back into focus.

The 22-year-old was at United's Carrington training ground today, alongside his father, for the first time since January 2022 but it is understood he did not take part in training.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe and after a successful season in Spain, which saw him named the club's Player of the Season, he has returned to United where has one year remaining on his contract.

He scored 10 goals and registered six assists for the Spanish side but his future is expected to lie away from Old Trafford and a quick decision over his future would offer the best solution for all parties involved.

As such, the Manchester Evening News have rounded up everything you need to know about Greenwood's future.

Marseille bid

The Manchester Evening News understands that United are in advanced talks with Marseille and the club held constructive talks with Greenwood about his future.

The French side, who recently appointed former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi as the club's new manager, have sent United a formal bid.

It has also been reported that United would be open to a loan deal with an obligation to buy Greenwood, and a sell-on clause would also be included in any deal. That would suggest that United could trigger a one-year contract extension, given Greenwood's current deal expires next summer.

Lazio interest moves on

Lazio are also believed to have made a bid for Greenwood and were linked with the England international last summer, too. However, Lazio owner Claudio Lotito has hinted they have moved on from their interest in Greenwood and have an alternative transfer target in mind this summer.

“The deal to sign Mason Greenwood was close last year but then it collapsed at the final stages," Lotito said. "Now I’ve one more name on the list, I can’t share the name but he’s 10 times better than Greenwood."

Manchester United stance

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 before charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped in February 2023.

Having been suspended by the club, United released a statement in August 2023 after concluding their own investigation, where they stated their belief that 'Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged' but they recognised the 'difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United'.

A loan move to Getafe last term was a temporary solution but United now need to reassess the situation this summer. MEN Sport understands that the club have prioritised finding Greenwood a new club and there are no plans for him to rejoin first team training after two-and-a-half years.

Sources told the Manchester Evening News that Greenwood spent a brief amount of time on Monday at Carrington to meet with the football leadership figures.

It is believed he was discussing his departure from the club and it is believed his departure is more advanced than Jadon Sancho's potential exit.
