Former Manchester United star David de Gea has hinted at a comeback to the Premier League with a mysterious message on social media.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper, who left Old Trafford last summer, posted a photo of goalie gloves and the words, "Work, work, work" on Instagram, sparking lots of talk about his next move. Last month, reports claimed United were considering making a move to bring De Gea back to the club.

Andre Onana, who replaced De Gea as goalkeeper last summer, might miss at least four games due to the Africa Cup of Nations next month and has made a mixed start to life at Old Trafford. However, it's still uncertain if United will officially approach De Gea, and if the ex-Atletico Madrid player would even consider returning to Old Trafford less than a year after his departure.

De Gea has already rejected offers from several clubs, including some tempting ones from the Saudi Pro League. But, The Mail reported earlier this month that he is now 'more open' to offers and might think about coming back to England.

One club he has been linked with are Premier League rivals Newcastle United, who are without current No.1 Nick Pope due to a dislocated shoulder. The England international is expected to miss the majority of the campaign and De Gea would represent a quality, experienced option to stand in for Eddie Howe's side.

Former United loanee Martin Dubravka has deputised in Pope's stead, but the Magpies are expected to assess their options in the coming weeks.
