Rio Ferdinand remains confident that Manchester United will finish in the top four and secure qualification for the Champions League once again this season.

United sit four points behind Arsenal in the hunt for fourth place, though they have two games in hand, and face a battle in the second half of the season.

Criticism towards United heightened once again last week following the 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Newcastle United, while the victory that followed against Burnley didn't wipe away those worries.

That has seen United's top-four credentials questioned but Ferdinand is still confident that Ralf Rangnick will secure Champions League football once again.

Asked on BT Sport who he is backing to finish fourth, Ferdinand said: "I’ve gone with my heart. Man United in the last four games maybe the performances can be questioned at times.

"But it’s a new person in charge he’s trying to implement his tactics etc and hasn’t had time on the training pitch so I think that’ll improve and I think there’s scope to improve there and I think they will do.

"As much as there’s a bit of doom and gloom around the club in terms of performance, they’ve won three out of their last four games so I think the run of games they’ve got will put them in a good place."

United have a testing run of fixtures coming up, with a Premier League clash against Wolves on Monday followed by an FA Cup tie against Aston Villa - who they then face again in the league.

The club are in the midst of a four-horse race for a top-four finish alongside Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham - but defeat to Wolves on Monday could put the Midlands club in the running.

It's likely the teams will be fighting for just a single spot in the top-four, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool have a considerable advantage.
