Meghan Markle has revealed what Prince Harry said to her following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The Duchess of Sussex, 41, reflected on the “complicated time” for the royal family for the first time since the monarch’s death on September 8, while sharing the emotional words her husband said to her after losing his grandmother.

Speaking in a new interview in the latest edition of Variety, Meghan also opened up on how the family are dealing with the loss of their matriarch. She said: “There’s been such an outpouring of love and support.

“I’m really grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during that time. What’s so beautiful is to look at the legacy his grandmother was able to leave on so many fronts.

“Certainly, in terms of female leadership, she is the most shining example of what that looks like.”

Meghan also shared the “deep gratitude” she felt at being able to spend time with and get to know the Queen, describing the period following her death as a “complicated time.” She said: “I’ve reflected on that first official engagement I had with her, how special that felt.

“I feel fortunate. And I continue to be proud to have had a nice warmth with the matriarch of the family.”

In revealing Prince Harry’s emotional remark to her following the Queen’s death, she praised her husband for being “ever the optimist.” She said: “My husband said, ‘Now she’s reunited with her husband.’”

The Duke and Duchess were on a short tour of Europe when the news of the Queen’s death broke, which allowed the couple to spend time with the family in the period that followed. They joined the new Prince and Princess of Wales in Windsor to view floral tributes and meet the crowds of mourners, in what was the first time the couples had been seen together since Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Meghan went on to describe how the royals are dealing with the Queen’s death, saying: “In big moments in life, you get a lot of perspective. It makes you wonder what you want to focus your energy on.

“Right now, we feel energised and excited about all of the things we’ve been building toward. We’re also focused on our foundation.

“So much of the work we do includes the philanthropic space.”

On Tuesday (October 18), Meghan opened up about her stint as a “briefcase girl” on the US version of Deal or No Deal, describing how she felt “forced to be all looks and little substance.”
