Fewer TransPennine Express services will run today due to a 'shortage of train crews'.

The operator said this morning (Monday) that trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised until the end of the day. Customers can use their tickets on Avanti West Coast, Northern, East Midlands Railway, ScotRail, Transport for Wales and Metrolink services 'via any reasonable route'.

People have been urged to check before they travel. This comes as a ban on overtime came into place for members of the Aslef union.

Members of the union at 15 train companies across England, including TransPennine Express, will refuse to work overtime from today to Saturday (August 5), and again from August 7 to 12. The union said its members involved in the dispute have not had a pay rise for four years.

Avanti West Coast, Cross Country, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway, Northern Trains and West Midlands Trains will also be affected. The overtime ban follows strikes last week by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) which crippled services.

Around 20,000 staff employed by 14 train operating companies staged a 24-hour walkout on Saturday (July 29) in the long-running dispute over pay, jobs and conditions.

TransPennine Express warned its customers to prepare for disruption, including delays and short-notice cancellations. Customer service and operations director Kathryn O’Brien said: “We are disappointed that this action will have such an impact on our customers’ journeys.

"We are anticipating significant disruption to our services for the next two weeks and I’m asking all our customers to be prepared for delays and cancellations across the network. We expect the disruption to be widespread and I would advise customers to check very carefully before they travel and to allow extra time for any journeys."
