A fire that broke out in a building above Burger King in Manchester city centre is not believed to have been started deliberately, police have said.

The blaze broke out a number of floors up from the fast-food restaurant in Piccadilly Gardens shortly after 11am today. Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to the scene and a cordon was put in place.

Pictures showed smoke billowing from a window near the top of the building. A ladder and hoses were used to extinguish the flames.

No one was injured in the incident, North West Ambulance Service confirmed. Burger King and a nearby vape shop were closed while trams were halted due to the blaze.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "This morning GMP, along with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) colleagues, attended reports of a fire at a premises above Burger King on Moseley Street in the Piccadilly Gardens area of Manchester City Centre.

"The fire was quickly extinguished by GMFRS and initial scene searches have, thankfully, not located any persons inside, with the fire contained to that specific premises. Due to the nature of the incident and location, the tram network was temporarily halted along Mosely Street. Burger King and the adjacent vape shop were closed as a precaution.

"With the fire now extinguished the scene has been significantly reduced, with the tram network now re-opened and businesses re-opening shortly. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage, but early indications are that this was not a fire started deliberately.

"GMFRS supported by GMP remain at the location carrying out further enquiries."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 11am today (Friday February 1) seven fire engines from Manchester Central, Moss Side, Salford, Blackley, Broughton and Gorton fire stations were called to reports of a fire involving a commercial building on Market Street, Manchester. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are used two hose reels and a jet to extinguish the fire and made the area safe. Crews were in attendance for around four and a half hours.”
