One man has died and another is in a critical condition in hospital following a horror crash in Oldham. Police and fire crews were called to a collision involving a motorcyclist and a pedestrian on Ripponden Road at about 4pm today.

A man in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene, while another man in his 20s is in a critical condition. The major road, just off junction 22 on the M62, remains closed in both directions.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 4pm this afternoon (Saturday 18 May 2024), we were called to a road traffic collision between a motorcycle and a pedestrian on Ripponden Road, Oldham. Upon arriving at the scene alongside colleagues

"Sadly, a man in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man, who is in his 20s, has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"Officers are urging the public to avoid the area while investigations are ongoing, and there are significant road closures in place. Anyone with information, dashcam or mobile phone footage is asked to call us on 101 quoting log 2320 of 18/05/2024."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added: "At just before 5pm today (Saturday 18 May), fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Ripponden Road, Oldham. One fire engine from Oldham quickly attended the incident which involved a motorcycle.

"Crews arrived quickly at scene and worked with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to make the vehicle and the area safe. Firefighters were in attendance for approximately forty five minutes."
