Sickening attacks were launched on two vulnerable men who were targeted for their phones. Police say a homeless man was punched in the face while an elderly man had coffee thrown over him during two city centre robberies.

The first incident took place on Saturday, June 1. Greater Manchester Police says it received a report that a homeless man, who had been asleep, was punched in the face before his phone was stolen.

Five days later, on Thursday, June 6, officers were informed that a pensioner had a cup of hot coffee thrown over him before being pushed to the ground. Again, the victim had his phone stolen.

GMP says it launched an immediate investigation into the attacks. Specialist detectives from Operation Vulcan, which has been focusing its efforts on Piccadilly Gardens in recent months, looked into the matter while patrols were ramped up in the area to identify the suspect.

They arrested a 37-year-old man in Piccadilly Gardens yesterday (June 11) in connection with the incidents. He was arrested on suspicion of two counts of robbery, going equipped to steal and possession of class A drugs. Officers also recovered bolt cutters and several snap bags of drugs.

Detective Sergeant Matt Donnelly, from Operation Vulcan, said: “Two vulnerable people were targeted for their mobile phones and were injured in the process. I hope this arrest sends a clear message that we will investigate this kind of crime thoroughly and ensure those responsible face the consequences of their actions.

“Incidents like this can have a long-lasting negative impact on the lives of those who fall victim to it. We will continue to use all resources available to protect victims of crime, pursue offenders, and ensure Piccadilly Gardens continues to be a safe and attractive place to visit in the heart of our city.”
