This is the moment a car thief was cornered by police following a high-speed chase - after driving into a subway and getting stuck.

The thief stole the VW Golf from Bolton, Greater Manchester, and then failed to stop when it was spotted by police in Huyton, Merseyside, on Sunday (May 26). The thief was then arrested by officers when they drove into the pedestrian underpass in the black vehicle and had "nowhere left to go".

During a chase, the motorist crashed into two other cars before making the mistake of driving into the subway. Merseyside Police said in a post on X: "This VW Golf was stolen in Bolton and failed to stop for patrols in Huyton, colliding with two members of the public's vehicles in the process.

"The pursuit ended when the vehicle entered a subway (yes a subway) and had nowhere left to go."
