We sat down with Dr. Alison McMillan, Professor in Aerospace Technology at Wrexham University at the SIMULIA Regional User Meeting in the UK to discuss her presentation Fretting: Modeling mechanisms for material damage. Fretting is an engineering design challenge for any machine with moving parts. It is a particular issue for components such as bearings, gear teeth, and airfoil root slots, where there is a high load applied and dynamic or vibration contact conditions. Fretting damage occurs when high-pressure conditions are applied to a surface in a region called “edge of bedding,” meaning a region where contact is intermittent. Read the full interview and learn more about Alison's perspectives on modeling material fatigue. ➡️ http://go.3ds.com/pfk Curious about the simulation shown below? The analysis result shown is of an axisymmetric geometry of a large substrate with a toroidal hole. The substrate is repeatedly loaded in contact by a rigid punch which is centrally flat and has a gently sloping edge curvature. The movie shows a quilt plot of von Mises stresses which exceed the elastic limit; the background is white, mesh lines are suppressed, and the deformation scale factor is set to 20 times. In the unloading phases, it is possible to see residual stress at both mid sides of the hole: at full load this is visualized as a pinching in of the hole to form a figure of eight shape.

What really happens when you put a fork in the microwave? 🍴Hassan CHREIM, PhD shows us. ⬇️ The sharp edges of the fork under high power, lead to charging the fork and enhancing the electric field around it. The high-intensity electric field causes partial discharge or what we call corona discharge, where the air is ionized around the fork (animation of 0.4 nanoseconds, under atmospheric pressure and 50 degrees of temperature). The corona discharge “weakens” the air dielectric strength and leads to a full discharge or what we call the sparking around the edges, fire hazards and destroyed ovens.

👉 RESEMIN reduced the design cycle time from months to hours. 👉 NIO breaks down silos and validates design upfront in the design phase. 👉 H2C (H2 Clipper, Inc), Textron Aviation, Inovonics and GE HealthCare are transforming operations. What do all of these companies have in common? They are putting MODSIM into action. Unified Modeling and Simulation (MODSIM) is essential for transformation. It shortens development times and uses advanced methods like machine learning to optimize complex systems. This technology delivers the power to truly transform a company’s processes, engineering and business. Explore this e-book to learn how a fully integrated MODSIM approach can create a new paradigm in product development ➡️ http://go.3ds.com/vwD

Derailment analysis is typical in the rail industry for safety and reliability of operation. 🚆 Below, the rail vehicle is subjected to severe wheel unloading by creating an artificial extreme track setup. Multibody System Simulation (MBS) is the only technology making it possible to analyze and understand the complete system dynamics, without requiring a physical prototype. Due to the high stiffness metal-to-metal contact and the complex friction behavior between the surfaces, wheel-rail contact mechanics are difficult to solve. To correctly simulate the rail-vehicle dynamics, an accurate rail-wheel contact calculation is essential. Simpack technology offers fast, accurate and robust rail-wheel contact algorithms, allowing non-elliptical contact and multiple contact patches per wheel.

It happens in a snap. 🔵 Newton's cradles are mesmerizing to watch, but have you ever thought about what's happening during each "click" of the spheres? And have you noticed that when you drop two spheres at one end, two spheres leave at the other end? These axisymmetric Abaqus/Explicit simulations reveal the mesmerizing physics that drive these behaviors at imperceptible time scales, here showing details of the pressure waves over the ~0.15 milliseconds from the moment of first impact to the moment the last sphere flies off.
