Last year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics issued dietary guidance recommending a daily flavanol intake of 400-600mg to support cardiometabolic health. Following research and media coverage of studies like COSMOS, consumers are more aware of the health benefits of flavanol intake. But it’s important that we can accurately quantify flavanols in food, so consumers can follow this guidance appropriately – and reap the health benefits. Dr Ugo Bussy, Ph.D., Principal Scientist at Mars, has worked to set the benchmark of analytics in flavanols for the wider industry, monitoring the performance of laboratory equipment and assessing researchers’ proficiency in following a standardized process. Read about this step forward for flavanol measurement here: https://lnkd.in/ezg7w27h #flavanols #analyticalchemistry

Researchers have found that the preparation and combination of fruits and vegetables affects the amount of flavanols available in the body. A new study published in Food & Function demonstrated that polyphenol oxidase, an enzyme abundant in fruits and vegetables such as bananas, significantly reduced the flavanol levels in smoothies. Meaning that blending flavanol-rich fruits and vegetables with high-PPO foods like bananas and avocados, releases the PPO and destroys the flavanols already during food preparation.   Smoothies and juices made with flavanol-rich foods such as apples, berries and cocoa flavanol supplements, including our CocoaVia supplement, have become a popular way for people to increase their intake of flavanols. But it is important to consider the combination of ingredients. For example, combining high-flavanol fruits such as berries in a smoothie with low-PPO foods including pineapple, oranges, and mango will help to maintain the level of dietary flavanols available.    The study was conducted by researchers at University of California, Davis and the University of Reading, in collaboration with Mars Edge.
