The Aspen Institute's Energy & Environment Program addresses critical energy, environmental, & climate change issues.
About us
The Energy and Environment Program (EEP) addresses critical energy, environmental, and climate change issues through non-partisan, non-ideological convening, with the specific intent of bringing together diverse stakeholders to improve the process and progress of policy-level dialogue. This enables EEP to sit at a critical intersection in the conversation and bring together diverse groups of expert stakeholders. In addition to energy and environmental policy, which the program has been addressing for several decades, EEP is now actively and purposefully engaging in climate change policy – mitigating the effects of climate change, adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change, and helping to build relationships for cooperation needed to achieve these goals amongst people and nations.

In this op-ed with ImpactAlpha, Joanna Smith-Ramani, co-executive director of Aspen FSP, and Greg Gershuny, executive director of The Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program (EEP), argue that the IRA’s “Direct Pay” option has an opportunity to create wealth in underserved communities. By leveraging the IRA’s direct pay option, we can build community wealth, mitigate climate impacts, and create a more equitable and resilient future for all.
Hurricane Beryl's recent impact highlights the urgent need for communities to adapt to escalating climate challenges. The Direct Pay provision, part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, empowers tax-exempt entities to receive direct payments for clean energy projects, democratizing access to investments. Stakeholders at the Aspen Ideas: Climate roundtable discussed its potential in enhancing financial and climate resilience. Read a recent op-ed, originally published in ImpactAlpha, by the The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program’s Joanna Smith-Ramani & The Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program (EEP)'s Greg Gershuny, where they explore the transformative effects of the provision and how it promotes shared ownership and an inclusive transition. https://lnkd.in/d9mSUgDK

“Coral reefs are the rainforest of the sea. They are the original real estate developers on planet Earth building complex ecosystems that demonstrate that it's possible that diverse communities can all live together symbiotically.” 🌊🐡 🗣: Bodhi Patil Bodhi Patil, ocean-climate solutionist, urged participants at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Climate to see themselves as part of nature, not above it, and to let the ocean be a model and source of climate solutions. 💡 #AspenIdeas #AspenIdeasClimate #OceanClimateAction #Nature

In a new op-ed for ImpactAlpha, The Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program (EEP)'s Greg Gershuny and The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program's Joanna Smith-Ramani discuss the unique wealth-building opportunities that the transition to clean energy can offer to communities, particularly through the "direct pay" tax provision of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. At a private roundtable at this year's Aspen Ideas Climate conference, investors, clean energy developers, and community leaders discussed the potential role of direct pay to increase financial and climate resilience. Gershuny and Smith-Ramani share three key takeaways from the discussion—read on at the link below.

When it comes to the story of climate change, “Mary Annaïse Heglar talks about how we're still in the writer's room, and I really believe that deeply.” ✍ 🗣: Wawa Gatheru at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Climate Many climate narratives are framed around doom, loss and finality, but these stories shouldn't be considered finished. We have a once in a species generation to re-shape our world to be good for all of us, and if we push for this change, there is a lot of joy and optimism left to be found in the planet's story.💡🌿 #AspenIdeas #AspenIdeasClimate #ClimateStories

🌿 Economic Opportunities in Clean Energy Transition 💵 The transition to a clean energy economy presents a significant opportunity for communities to build financial stability through new green jobs and industries. Cross-sector collaboration is crucial for communities to leverage these opportunities, build wealth, and mitigate the costs of climate change. The IRA's direct pay provision is pivotal, allowing tax-exempt entities like schools and nonprofits to access clean energy investments. 💡 Key Insights: 🌆 Shared Ownership: Direct pay encourages community ownership of clean energy projects, boosting local investment and resilience. 👋 Inclusive Transition: Expanding access to clean energy jobs for marginalized groups ensures a just transition, fostering economic inclusion. ⤴ Boosting Uptake: Addressing initial deployment challenges through technical partnerships and innovative financing solutions is essential. By framing the clean energy transition as a wealth-building opportunity, we can create a more equitable and resilient future. 🌍💪 #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #CommunityResilience #Sustainability #GreenJobs Joanna Smith-Ramani The Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program (EEP) https://lnkd.in/eWwRRrmg
