Today, OCED issued a Notice of Intent for up to $100M to fund pilot-scale energy storage demonstration projects, focusing on non-lithium technologies, long-duration (10+ hour discharge) systems, and stationary storage applications. With this funding, OCED aims to support the advancement of a diverse set of long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies towards commercial viability and utility-scale deployment, an integral ingredient in a clean, reliable grid system to achieve a net-zero emissions clean energy economy. CLEAN ENERGY WIN – One heat pump manufacturer from Michigan just broke ground on their 29,000-ft2 industrial heat pump manufacturing wing, made possible with support from DOE Manufacturing & Energy Supply Chains Office (MESC). Increasing U.S. manufacturing strengthens our energy independence, lowers consumer costs, and creates good-paying American jobs. Collaboration is critical to advancing the technologies we need to achieve our national climate goals, which is why we encourage more American manufacturers to leverage DOE funding to advance our clean energy future. This is the first of several projects that will increase U.S.-based manufacturing of heat pumps and components, as part of the DOE’s Defense Production Act program that aims to strengthen the nation’s energy security. Watch the video to learn more about this win for domestic manufacturing: https://lnkd.in/eFcfX4bf #CleanEnergyWin #MadeInAmerica

Recently, @Water Strategies LLC’s magazine Municipal Water Leader interviewed me about IEDO’s ongoing efforts in making water desalination and purification less costly and more energy efficient. Specifically, I spoke on the National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI), DOE’s energy-water desalination hub that was created in 2019 and renewed for $75 million this year. Our conversation covered a wide range of water innovation topics, including nontraditional water sources, desalination and water reuse technologies, and fit-for-purpose water. Click here to read more about what we discussed: https://lnkd.in/eTB64btq. Our conversation takes place on pages 38-40.

CLEAN ENERGY WIN: EERE’s SuperTruck 2 program is putting sustainable transportation in the driver’s seat! Decarbonizing the transportation sector requires a big change in the trucking industry. That’s why EERE’s SuperTruck 2 program challenged participants to develop and demonstrate cost-effective technologies that improve the freight efficiency of 18-wheelers. Check out this clean energy win to see how one team went above and beyond their Super Truck 2 goals, improving the freight efficiency of their super truck by 136%! https://lnkd.in/eAth7TPj #SustainableTransportation #CleanEnergyWin

CLEAN ENERGY WIN – The wind industry is getting a major boost with the announcement of the United States’ first offshore wind installation vessel! With its maiden voyage scheduled for 2025, Dominion Energy’s Charybdis will be the first ship made in the United States that can pick up components from onshore manufacturers, deliver them to American offshore wind sites, and help assemble the wind projects that will bring us one step closer to reaching 30,000 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. Watch the video to see what our Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Jeffrey Marootian has to say about how favorable tax credits and investments from the Inflation Reduction Act can bring more wins like this one to the offshore wind industry: https://lnkd.in/ex4vRzCZ #OffshoreWind #MadeInAmerica #CleanEnergy

EERE is here to give communities and villages across the country the tools and resources they need to transition to clean energy. One way we do this is through our Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project, where we work with remote islands, communities, and villages like Igiugig, Alaska, to research and analyze the best transition to a sustainable and resilient energy system. Check out the video below to hear APDAS Alejandro Moreno and Igiugig Village Council President AlexAnna Salmon discuss their progress and the impacts of their collaboration with EERE. Want to see more ETIPP examples? Check out these recent wins for the Alaskan energy-scape: https://lnkd.in/ecx_t-KW If you’re interested in technical assistance with EERE, apply to ETIPP by July 10: https://lnkd.in/g6PUFzT #CleanEnergyWins #ETIPP
The state of Alaska faces unique energy challenges, from generating electricity in freezing cold temperatures to securing local energy supplies against inclement weather. EERE’s technical assistance programs and resources meet Alaskan communities where they are, ensuring they have all the information they need to plan their clean energy futures. This past week, it was an honor to visit Alaska collaborate with their government, communities, and energy utilities. I got to moderate and participate in engaging discussions about the present and future of clean energy at the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference, leveraging how our technical assistance programs like the Clean Energy to Communities program and the expertise of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have helped Alaskan communities evaluate their energy needs. During the first in-person gathering of the Arctic Energy Ambassadors, we talked about their region’s energy landscape, and I was able to hear their needs, priorities, and regional progress directly from the source. This is why we meet with state leaders, community leaders, and our utilities across the nation. We want to hear what you need for your clean energy transition, and we want to provide you with the support and resources to make it happen. The trip was also an opportunity to reflect on the progress of EERE’s wide range of work in the state. I visited our NREL campus in Fairbanks, Alaska, where Bruno C. Grunau, P.E. and his team showed us how the Housing Solutions for Every Climate concept is developing and deploying energy-efficient, healthy buildings and energy systems in extreme climates. From air source heat pump technologies to building insulation and adjustable foundations, these research projects show our dedication to making energy-efficient housing accessible, no matter the climate I also got to meet with the Igiugig Village Council leaders, where we discussed how the village used funding from our Water Power Technologies Office to pilot a device that captures power from river currents. It was inspiring to see how the Council’s president, AlexAnna Salmon, and everyone in the village works together every day to provide for their community and to see where EERE technical assistance and funding can support a future where energy truly is reliable and affordable for all Americans, no matter where they live. I’d like to personally thank everyone I met on this trip, from the leaders and utilities committed to keeping the lights (and heat!) on in the communities they serve, to people across the state giving voice to the communities they live in and fighting for their future. You are all incredible leaders. And a special thanks to Erin Whitney and the Arctic Energy Office, U.S. Dept. of Energy for making all of this work possible. I look forward to continued collaboration with you and with Alaskans across the state! https://lnkd.in/eQqHSjZp
