"On August 6, 2024, the Mendenhall River, which runs through northern Juneau, Alaska, exceeded major flood stage, flooding streets, inundating homes, and displacing residents. This flooding was caused by a glacial outburst, when water that is dammed up by a glacier suddenly gives way and is released downstream. This glacial outburst occurred nearly one year to the date of last year's event, which experts said would not have been possible without climate change." https://lnkd.in/e4C7SCSs

Advancing scientific understanding of climate. Improving society's ability to plan and respond.
About us
The Climate Program Office (CPO) manages competitive research programs in which NOAA funds high-priority climate science, assessments, decision support research, outreach, education, and capacity-building activities designed to advance our understanding of Earth’s climate system, and to foster the application of this knowledge in risk management and adaptation efforts. CPO-supported research is conducted in regions across the United States, at national and international scales, and globally.

"States and many counties and municipalities are trying to become more resilient in the face of weather and climate events. Now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and ICF have teamed up with other partners, including the Climate Resilience Fund (CRF), EcoAdapt, Fernleaf, Geos Institute, and the Environment Equity and Justice Center at NRDC, on a climate change resilience grant program and, to use the modern parlance, playbook. The Federal Drive with Tom Temin found out how the partnership works from ICF senior consultant Adam Parris and NOAA program manager Ned Gardiner." https://lnkd.in/ek_33CC2

"You’ll have to excuse this ENSO Blogger for a minute while I drink some sweet tea on the porch and lament about all the heat and humidity, 'Woof, it’s hot!' Things truly seem to move slower during the dog days of summer in late July and early August. And it seems like the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a climate pattern in the tropical Pacific Ocean that can affect weather across the world, is no exception. The expected transition from ENSO-Neutral to La Niña continues to proceed slowly, as if the whole Pacific is stuck in a summer daze, moving as slow as molasses." https://lnkd.in/eNhA-Jgy

"The North Pacific has warmed significantly faster than any other ocean basin on Earth since 2013, enduring two major marine heat waves in five years that had devastating effects on marine mammals, seabirds, as well as fisheries and the communities that rely on them." https://lnkd.in/eK_bpB8U

"The Climate Program Office (CPO) is announcing eight new three-year projects in Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) that aim to increase our understanding of methane’s significance in the atmosphere by exploring global, regional and local concentration and trends, modeling methane budgets and frameworks for measurement and verification of emissions. The competitively selected projects total $5.3 million in grants." https://lnkd.in/eNUA5jhC

BREAKING NEWS: The CSCI today announced today announced its first round of awards, with more than $1 million going to help 11 communities on the front lines of the climate crisis accelerate their climate resilience plans and projects. For more on the awards, go to https://lnkd.in/eQBY5-fq. And be sure to follow this new page, Climate Smart Communities Initiative (CSCI) for updates on the additional rounds of funding, as well as the other resources that are coming soon, from a searchable registry to help local leaders find adaptation professionals to opportunities for training and knowledge sharing. With thanks and appreciation to Climate Resilience Fund, EcoAdapt, Fernleaf, Geos Institute, ICF, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and congratulations to all of the awarded communities.

"Across the globe, natural resource managers now face the reality of stewarding such landscapes with vastly different species and functions. These are just three examples of drought-triggered ecological transformation, a growing phenomenon that is highlighted in a new paper in the journal BioScience." https://lnkd.in/e4QPdAMk

"Above-average temperatures continued across most of the western and eastern parts of the United States during July, although the middle of the nation did get a respite from the intense heat. Rainfall during the month was generally above average in parts of the central part of the nation (consistent with the below-average temperatures) and also along the Gulf Coast and much of the Southeast." https://lnkd.in/eWBHWJxn
