New York City Mayor Unveils Strategy for Ethical Use of AI in Municipal Operations!

New York City's Mayor, Eric Adams, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to guide the responsible utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) within the local government. As part of this initiative, the city has introduced its first AI chatbot through an update to the MyCity Business platform.

This plan, released by Mayor Adams' administration, aims to establish a framework for government agencies to prudently assess AI tools and their associated risks. It also focuses on enhancing the knowledge and skills of government employees in AI technologies, ultimately contributing to an improved quality of life for the city's residents.

The plan comprises 37 key actions, with 29 of them scheduled to commence or conclude within the next year. Key objectives include the establishment of a governance framework for AI, the creation of an AI advisory network, the training of city officials in AI, and the annual publication of an AI progress report.

Mayor Adams acknowledged the potential of AI to enhance government services but stressed the importance of being vigilant about its risks.

In conjunction with the announcement of the forthcoming AI framework, the MyCity Business platform has introduced the first pilot of an AI chatbot designed to assist with inquiries related to opening or operating a business in the city. Maria Torres-Springer, the city's deputy mayor for housing, economic development, and workforce, lauded the chatbot's introduction, highlighting its role in making government resources more accessible to the public. She noted that this user-friendly tool could significantly benefit small businesses throughout New York City.

The new AI chatbot is equipped to extract information from over 2,000 web pages related to NYC businesses, offering guidance on code compliance, available business incentives, and best practices to avoid violations and fines.

This move aligns with the broader trend of governmental and regulatory bodies incorporating AI technologies to improve services, monitor financial sectors for fraud and manipulation, and enhance accessibility to critical information. For example, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) recently revealed its plans to develop an AI bot similar to ChatGPT for investigative purposes, while the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) employs AI for monitoring financial activities for signs of misconduct.
