New Meta & TikTok subscription fees, plus ChatGPT advances

New subscription fees for EU users of Facebook & Instagram

Meta plans to introduce monthly subscription fees for Facebook and Instagram users in the EU.

For Instagram on mobile devices, a $14 monthly subscription fee will be charged unless users permit personal information for targeted ads. A combined $17 fee for Facebook and Instagram on desktop is also being considered.

This move follows discussions with EU regulators aiming to address the profit generation methods of large tech firms through user data. These changes come in response to new EU laws that impose stricter regulations on data handling.

TikTok also experiments with an ad-free subscription option

TikTok is reportedly testing a $4.99 per month ad-free subscription option, following Meta's similar experiment.

The move could help TikTok adapt to evolving privacy regulations, such as the EU's Digital Services Act, which allows users to opt out of personalised content, including ads.

By offering an ad-free tier, TikTok can potentially maintain user engagement while addressing regulatory changes.

This aligns with a broader trend of social media platforms exploring ad-free subscription models to diversify revenue streams and provide users with alternative experiences.

ChatGPT can now browse the internet for you

Do you use ChatGPT as part of your content creation process? If so, you’ll be thrilled to hear about this latest update.

OpenAI has announced a significant update for ChatGPT, enabling it to browse the live web and provide current information with direct links to sources.

This update ensures responses are no longer restricted to data predating September 2021, making ChatGPT more accurate and reflective of current events.

While not all websites will be accessible due to data scraping opt-outs, it broadens ChatGPT's data pool and enhances its usability for social media content creation.
