Meet CalyGrads: Calypso's Where are They Now Series - Gavin

As one of the largest summer seasonal employers in Eastern Ontario, Calypso waterpark has provided summer time fun and employment to almost 5,000 young people since 2010. Of course the big draw for young people is being able to enjoy the attractions on their days off, and we offer some pretty sweet opportunities like discounts, contests and some amazing end-of-season awards. The biggest thing for our student workers and for us is the ability for them to return each season without having to look for another summer job. We wanted to be sure our seasonal staff was going away with more than just benefits, we wanted impact. We asked some of our former employees about their Calypso experience and we were so humbled by the responses, we have decided to share some of them. Here is another in our Calygrads: Calypso's Where are They Now series!

Meet Gavin Harmon!

Calypso Theme Water Park is a fantastic place to work – especially for students. I began working at Calypso Theme Water Park in 2016, as a slide attendant at the age of 17. I had just graduated high school and was recommended to apply to work here by a friend of mine.

During my employment at Calypso, I was able to effectively work my way up through four different departments over three summers. I began my time at Calypso as a slide attendant, moving up to my last summer I was able to work the pre-season in the corporate office as a Human Resource Assistant. Throughout my employment at Calypso, I was able to learn and sharpen valuable client facing skills that I use in my work today!

I was promoted to a Lifeguard position my second summer upon completing my National Lifeguarding Certification (NLS) – Pool and Waterpark. During this time, I was concurrently enrolled in my undergraduate bachelor’s degree, which had four-month summer breaks. The park opens to the public in June, which is when the aquatic department begins operation. I was provided the opportunity to work during the preseason month in the maintenance and horticulture department during the month of May, granting me an extra month of full-time employment.

I highly recommend taking a look at the job opportunities this organization is posting. The culture is inclusive and fun. The social networking opportunity is great – especially for students and teenagers. One of my favorite things about working at Calypso Theme Water Park is that there’s a wide range of job opportunities that you can transition into. It’s also a diverse workplace which has obvious benefits.

Gavin is currently an Associate Account Executive at Amazon Web Services (AWS)
