How to Shine in an Interview

How to Shine in an Interview

Generally, interviews aren’t scary. However, the thought of them for some people, is enough to ensure a sleepless night. Over the past 18 months I have noticed a few things that help you stand out from the crowd. Very often we are talking about fine margins when it comes to a successful interview or receiving the ‘unfortunately not on this occasion’ e-mail. So, what is going to tilt the scales in your favour?

1.      Be yourself

A good interviewer is looking for someone they can work alongside. It should not be a one-sided affair, where you feel like you’re being scrutinised and pressured. What is important to remember, is that any company you’re interviewing with is looking to find someone who can be an asset to their business. It would be a very boring world if we were all the same, let your personality come through. Keep it professional but not robotic.

2.      Research

When preparing for your interview, have a look online for news articles or recruitment drives or anything you find on the company that is not readily available. Ask the interviewer questions about things you have seen online, and you’ll possibly even find yourself telling them something they didn’t know about their employer. It shows initiative and it shows a genuine interest.

3.      Have a genuine interest

If you’re not interested in what the company does as a business, you’re not going to be interested in the day-to-day of the project. Don’t waste your own time, you can’t get it back

4.      Tell them how good YOU are

There are a lot of buzzwords out there and on almost every ‘Job Specification’ you will see; ‘must be able to work well in a team’ – as essential as this is, don’t let it take over the interview. When you are asked specifics on your experience, remember to show yourself off. What did YOU do to help the team achieve its target; what was YOUR role in the project; what were YOU in charge of? Use specific examples as much as possible and tailor them to the role. It’s YOUR time to shine and an interviewer wants to hear all about it.

5.      Make notes

It is 100% acceptable to bring a notepad and pen with you. As much as you hope it doesn’t happen, there could be a period during the interview where you panic a little or your mind might ‘go blank’. Remember all the examples you practiced over and over in your head last night? Gone. Your notes will save you, all your brain needs is a little prompt and the information comes rushing back - suddenly you’re back on track. Bossing it.

6.      Win or Learn

Conor McGregor’s head coach has a simple ethos. He has even had a best-selling book based on it. You either win or you learn. Every interview isn’t going to be a success, but you can take something from every interview you do. Ask for feedback, ask where you were strong and ask where you could improve. Use this information to your advantage and remember it isn’t personal. A failed interview could end up helping you get your dream job down the line.

7.      Have the basics covered

·        Ask for the dress code

·        Plan your journey so you aren’t late

·        If you’re offered water, take it

·        Remember to shake hands

·        Have questions prepared

These are all my opinions based on personal experience. I’ve probably missed loads and I am 100% sure people won’t agree with everything I’ve said. Always remember, you have been invited to an interview for a reason. Get out there and get the job.
