EXCLUSIVE: Addressing three major GLP-1 myths

EXCLUSIVE: Addressing three major GLP-1 myths

The latest frenzy in the world of weight-loss is undoubtedly weight-loss medications. But, what we know about the efficacy and suggested use of these medications is very different from what is portrayed in the media.

So, let’s set the record straight.

MYTH 1: Quick fix for weight loss

If anything promises to be a ‘miracle drug’ or a ‘quick fix’ for weight loss, it’s too good to be true. Though these medications can speed up the process of weight loss, sustainable results require tailored medication management to control dosage and use, and overall healthier lifestyle changes.

MYTH 2: One-size-fits-all

Here’s the thing, weight-loss medications are not for every person on a weight-loss journey. Ideal candidates have a BMI equal or greater than 30, or a BMI equal or greater than 27 with one or more obesity-related conditions, like diabetes. And when it comes to finding the right fit, it’s important to remember that medications yield varying results for different people. This is why investing in a program that offers tailored medication management is key to seeing results.

MYTH 3: Unsafe

There's a belief that weight-loss medications are inherently dangerous or “bad”. While some medications carry risks and side effects, like any other medication, using FDA-approved medications as prescribed by a medical professional is safe and effective. However, recently compounded medications have taken the media by storm. In a recent blog we addressed our concerns about the dangers of compounded medications and why the risk is not worth the reward.

Navigating weight-loss medications and managing obesity can feel overwhelming due to conflicting information in the media. Wondr Health's solution, Wondr Advanced, prioritizes safety and effectiveness by utilizing board-certified obesity experts, personalized medicine, and a proven behavior-change program to achieve positive clinical results and reduce costs. This is a good read and why GLP-1 management companies need to be more of a thing. Payers who are ultimately paying for these medications need to insist on a much more personalized approach to patients. I've seen so many people dosing however they feel, it's ridiculous.

It sounds like the current marketing is not doing these subtleties justice. And they are very valid points you highlighted.

We need to be referring to these medications accurately. Words matter. GLP-1 receptor agonists (in this context) are anti-obesity medications. Comprehensively treating people living with the disease of obesity is radically different than promoting or selling weight loss. Simply using a tool to help people eat less isn't a new concept & does very little to improve overall health at scale. And, we have to stop referring to these non-FDA-approved alternatives as compounded medications. The term gives them more credibility than they deserve. Compounding is a long-standing practice that is accepted in most halls of medicine. Compounding involves reformatting FDA-approved, regulated generic molecules to adjust delivery system or taste or dose. Since there are no regulated generic molecules for these medications, they are not the same thing. Let's start calling them what they are: bootlegged medications.
