Data Dashboarding with Legends

Communicating any kind of data analysis can be done thru visualization. Telling a story with your data to convince the reader of what point your trying to make brings them to a better understanding of a situation with facts i.e. data. How do we get there?

Start with a Question

Starting with a question will hopefully create a roadmap to how you want to present your data. Questions like "What is the forecast for next year?", lead you down a forward thinking, maybe predictive path."Which products are our customers buying the most?" is a question that considers the present, leading to a review of the current state of customer activity.

Consider it an Art & Science

Treat it as an Art & Science. Take that extra time to clean, arrange and classify your data like a scientist. Next, draw from your creativity and be a data artist.

Lean on Legendary Dashboard makers for guidance.

John Snow - English epidemiologist and physician. Depicting the cholera outbreak of 1854
Hans Rosling - Swedish physician, academic and public speaker, in 2017, tells the story of the world in 200 countries over 200 years using 120,000 numbers - in just four minutes.
W.E.B. Du Bois - American activist. Library of Congress, Georgia population study drawn by hand.

Tableau Public

Tableau Public is a great visualization resource when using public data. As an example to get you started, check out the video below to create a map in Tableau Public using the “Significant Volcanic Eruptions” dataset found here.

Happy Dashboarding!
