Connecting EFFECTIVELY on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a powerful professional tool for connections. Here are some of my observations on how to use the tool effectively. There are various online media platforms and each has their role to play. The messaging may be the same but the way it is delivered is also different because of the audience and more importantly, the frame of mind when you're on the various platforms. I'd like to share 3 ways I have used it effectively and also my pet peeves.

Be Professional - What I mean by that is by communicating professionally. I have no qualms about accepting connections on LinkedIn. It's about expanding the network and it's interesting to learn about different industries. When sending a message to someone personally, it's okay to say who you are, what you do and make that connection. It's even alright to get straight to your point of business. However, if you send a message like asking where I am from and what I do (hello, this is LinkedIn!) and how beautiful I am, I will immediately block and report you for being inappropriate. This is not a dating site and it's offensive, scary and rude. I am also not a headhunter and if I really don't know you from Adam, why would I recommend a job for you?

Be A Resource - I am a communicator and content creator in essence. You may be in finance for example. Can you share articles about finance you have written or share other people's articles (and have a differing opinion too) and be seen as a subject matter expert in your field. Your network will appreciate you for this and when they think of finance, you'll be the first person they recall. There are many other ways you can be a resource but this just one example.

Be Consistent - Like any other platform, it's about consistency in your messaging. Are you constantly seen and heard talking about your areas of interests? What is consistent? It is really up to you. Every day? Once a week? Once a year may not be so effective though!

Also, because this is a professional site, are you sharing information that's connected to your persona and what your brand stands for. I don't share my holiday pictures unless I see a connection to how it relates to me professionally. So be clear what message you're sending out on what platforms.

Thanks for reading and stay safe!
